About Garrick
Garrick Percival earned his Ph.D. in political science at the University of California, Riverside in 2005. His work focuses on American and California politics, criminal justice policy, and racial and social inequality. He is the author or co-author of three books: Smart on Crime: The Struggle to Build A Better American Penal System (2015), California Politics and Government: A Practical Approach (15ed, 2021), and California鈥檚 Recall Election of Gavin Newsom: Covid-19 and the Test of Leadership (2022). He is currently working on two primary projects. The first is focused on local prosecutors and their relationship to California's de-incarceration efforts. The second, a book-length monograph, investigates fractures within the Democratic Party around criminal justice reform. His work has appeared in State and Local Government Review, State Politics and Policy Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, Political Research Quarterly, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, and the Policy Studies Journal, among other outlets. In his spare time, Professor Percival enjoys cycling, running, San Jose Sharks games, baseball, and taking in with his family all the warmth, beauty, and great food the Bay Area has to offer.

What are your interests/hobbies?
I really enjoy the outdoors. Hiking and camping with my family and friends, disconnecting from all things digital. My favorite sport is cycling and exploring the region's seemingly endless hills and valleys.
What is cool about your job or about working for 91暗网?
Without doubt, the students. I've been so fortunate to share a classroom with so many talented and engaged students who have taught me so much.
What advice would you give to graduate students?
Join a graduate student club or organization in your department or area of study. Take the time to foster connections and friendships with your student peers and faculty mentors. The benefits will last a lifetime.
